How to Manually Import XML Demo Content into WordPress

Follow the steps below to import the demo XML file(s) into your WordPress website.

1. Log in to Your WordPress Dashboard

  1. Open your website admin URL (usually: yourdomain.com/wp-admin).

  2. Log in with your username and password.

2. Install the “WordPress Importer” Plugin (If Not Already Installed)

  1. In the left menu, go to Tools → Import.

  2. Scroll down to WordPress (at the bottom of the list).

  3. If you see an Install Now link, click it to install the WordPress Importer plugin.

  4. After installation, click Run Importer.

If the importer is already installed, you will just see Run Importer – click that.

3. Upload the XML File

  1. On the Import WordPress screen, click Choose File.

  2. Select the XML file I provided from your computer.

  3. Click Upload file and import.

4. Assign Authors

On the next screen:

  1. Choose whether to assign the imported content to an existing user (recommended: your main admin user) or create a new one.

  2. Tick Download and import file attachments so images and media are imported as well (if your server allows it).

  3. Click Submit / Import.

5. Wait for the Import to Complete

  1. The importer will run and you’ll see messages like Importing post…, Importing media…, etc.

  2. When finished, you should see a message like All done. Have fun! or similar.

If the process stops or shows a timeout/error, you can simply re-run the import with the same XML file.

6. If Images Are Missing, Re-Import the Same XML

Because of server limits (memory/timeout), sometimes not all images are imported in one attempt.

If you see that:

  • The demo pages/posts are there, but some images are missing or broken,

then:

  1. Go back to Tools → Import → WordPress → Run Importer.

  2. Select the same XML file again.

  3. Repeat the import (assign to the same user and tick Download and import file attachments again).

You may need to repeat this 2–3 times until most images are imported.

The importer usually skips already existing posts/pages, so repeating the import is generally safe and mainly helps with missing images.

7. Importing Multiple Demos on the Same Website

You can import several demo XML files into the same WordPress installation. For each demo:

  1. Repeat the same process: Tools → Import → WordPress → Run Importer.

  2. Select the XML file for the demo you want to add.

  3. Import it as described above.

After importing multiple demos:

  • You may have several versions of homepages and other pages.

  • You can choose which one to use as your main homepage in
Settings → Reading → “Your homepage displays”.

  • You may also need to:

    • Assign the correct menus under Appearance → Menus.

    • Adjust widgets under Appearance → Widgets.

    • Remove any demo pages you don’t need to keep the site clean.

8. Final Check on the Frontend

  1. Visit your website homepage and key inner pages.

  2. Confirm that:

    • Pages/posts from the demos are visible.

    • Menus are working correctly.

    • Most images are showing (if not, repeat the import as in Step 6).
